Black & White Street Photography! Street photography and black & white photography go hand in hand. This associating is due to the greats of street photography all shooting Black & White film back in the day. It was what the very first street photographers had access to and could develop easily. It is also a more dramatic choice and easier to help focus a viewers attention to a specific point in the photography without any distracting splashes of colour throughout the image.
With B&W images, it is somewhat easier to focus the viewer’s attention with the use of tone, contrast and focus detail. For example the image of the dog riding in the car staring at me as I take it’s picture; even though it is just one of many white areas in the image, it is sharply focused and silhouetted by the shadow of the car interior and driver and so stands out immediately as the central subject. This might be harder to do if the bright colours of the flag and flag carriers were splashed throughout the image.
