Today’s daily street photography image, from my People in the City project.
I almost missed her. By the time I lifted the camera she was already walking away, and that is how downtown Toronto street style usually reaches me. Nobody poses. You either catch it or you watch it go.
It was the shawl that turned my head. A plain white skirt, simple and quiet, and then this shawl loud with blue and green circles thrown over one shoulder. One person dressing for herself on an ordinary block near the Toronto Islamic Centre.
How downtown Toronto street style shows up uninvited
The light was doing me a favour. Late in the day, the sun coming straight down the avenue, long tree shadows stretched flat across the sidewalk. The road behind her was nearly empty. The glass towers went soft and grey while she stayed sharp and bright, the one thing left to look at.
I shot her from behind on purpose. You do not need a face to read a moment. The flat shoes, the bag in one hand, the steady pace of someone who is not late for anything. That tells you enough.
This one sits with my People in the City work. It is about the small choices strangers make without knowing anyone is watching. A colour, a pattern, a way of walking. Most days I lift the camera for no one. Then somebody turns a dead block into a frame worth keeping.
